Trusting yourself is a hard job. It means not second guessing yourself, not moving with fear, but above all else, trusting your intuition. Outside of that, the biggest challenge lies in deciphering if it’s intuition or anxiety.
But how do you know what’s intuition or anxiety? This article will help you tell the difference and, hopefully, teach you how to trust what you’re being guided to.
The Thin Line Between Intuition Or Anxiety
It’s a thin line between intuition and or anxiety. That line is you. And it’s often your ability to separate fear-driven thoughts from that quiet, knowing voice trying to guide you.
So how do you know which is which?
Anxiety, though internal, is loud when it wants your attention. Let’s say you’re in a relationship, and one of your biggest fears is being cheated on. One day, your partner starts acting differently. Instead of asking them directly, you begin replaying their actions, looking for clues. Without concrete proof, you convince yourself something is wrong. You start searching for evidence, and even when you find something small, it isn’t enough—because anxiety doesn’t stop. It keeps pushing, making you dig deeper, looking for more proof.
That’s anxiety.
Anxiety is like a nagging parent. But it doesn’t go away. When you allow anxiety to win it doesn’t go silently. It gets louder and leads to more anxious actions.
Intuition on the other hand is quiet. If you’re new to listening to your intuition, you may not even hear it. Intuition is like that nurturing grandparent that brings you tea before bed. They rest it down and let you get to it.
Signs You’re Tuning Into Intuition
At some point, anxiety wears you down. The sleepless nights, the constant second-guessing—it gets exhausting. And when you’re finally ready for peace, you start choosing to listen to your intuition instead.
You’ll love it here, promise.
Here are three signs that it’s your intuition you’re hearing:
- Peace: Intuition isn’t loud. It flashes then disappears. When you listen to it, it disappears. It almost makes you feel as if you imagined it. But you’re at peace.
- Clarity: Intuition isn’t chaotic. It doesn’t run through endless scenarios. Instead, it feels like a natural, immediate understanding of what you need to do. There’s no mental tug-of-war; it’s a straightforward sense of direction that arises without much effort.
- Synchronicities: Sometimes, intuition is reinforced by synchronicities. You might think about a decision, and the right person or resource appears just when you need it. These moments often feel serendipitous, but they’re signs that you’re in tune with your inner guidance.
Signs You’re Listening to Your Anxiety
I’ve already explained how anxiety feels.
However, if you’ve been letting your anxiety win for a long time, it may feel normal.
So here’s how to recognize if your anxiety is running your house.
- Constant Overthinking: If you listened to your intuition you wouldn’t constantly overthink. There’s a certain peace with just knowing and it allows your mind to move on. But anxiety never rests. It takes no days off and instead of giving you peace it fills your head with multiple scenarios. None of which make any sense.
- Fear of the Future: Now that you’ve let your anxiety win, you’re in fear of what’s next. Why? Because anxiety is an unwanted visitor that can’t take a hint.
- An Urgent Pressing Feeling: So if you had listened to your intuition, you’d be free flowing because you’d be secure in knowing that whatever happens next, you’ll be safe. But when you allow your anxiety to win, you’re never at peace. You’re always worrying what’s next and this can either lead to impulsive decisions or avoidance.
Tools to Differentiate Between Anxiety and Intuition
Differentiating between anxiety or intuition isn’t something you’ll get overnight. In fact, it’ll take a few failures before you’re able to decipher between the two. But it isn’t an impossible task.
Just remember, anxiety feels urgent and all over the place. While intuition feels calm and steady.
Here are a few tools that have helped me:
- Journaling: I’m a writer, so of course this tops my list. But writing helps me make sense of thoughts that are just otherwise all over the place. Using journaling to help you understand what you’re feeling is perfect for beginners. Just pick up a pen and write down your thoughts without stopping or even judgement. Then read them over and you decide:
– is this a worry or a deep knowing?
– Am I predicting something that hasn’t happened yet or do I actually know this? - Pause and Breathe: Before making a decision, pause. Sit there, don’t do anything. Take four deep breaths and release. What do you feel? An urge to act? Or are you at peace? If you feel urged to act, that’s your anxiety. It doesn’t shut up or sit down.
- First Responder: I call this the first responder because it’s the first on the scene. When you have a choice to make, what emotion arrives on the scene first? The initial emotion is usually your intuition. Anxiety comes when you start questioning the initial emotion.
Conclusion: Trusting Yourself
One of the most common questions I get is: How do I know if it’s my intuition?
The answer is trust.
Learning to distinguish between intuition or anxiety is about building a deeper trust in yourself. And I won’t lie to you—it’s not always easy. But it’s a practice. The more you tune in, the more familiar intuition becomes, and the less power anxiety has over you.
When you understand the difference between a gut feeling and fear-based thinking, you no longer have to second-guess every move. You become more confident, grounded, and aligned with your own truth.
But here’s the thing—trusting yourself is a practice, not a switch you flip overnight. The more you tune in, the more familiar intuition will feel, and the less power anxiety will have over your choices. It’s about consistency, self-awareness, and patience with yourself.
How to Strengthen Your Intuition Daily
If you want to build confidence in your inner voice, here are a few simple things you can do every day:
1. Start Small
Your intuition isn’t just for big life decisions—it’s in the little things too. Pay attention to your daily nudges:
- Do you feel drawn to take a different route home?
- Do you suddenly think of an old friend and feel the urge to check in?
- Does something about a situation feel off even though it looks fine?
The more you listen to these subtle cues, the stronger your intuition becomes.
2. Create Stillness
Intuition doesn’t compete with noise. If your mind is constantly cluttered with social media, news, and stress, it’ll be harder to hear your inner wisdom. Make space for quiet moments—whether that’s through meditation, deep breathing, or just sitting in silence with your thoughts.
3. Trust The First Feeling
Remember: Intuition speaks first, anxiety speaks loudest. Practice going with your first instinct before your mind starts spinning stories of doubt. The more you honor that initial knowing, the stronger it gets.
4. Practice Discernment, Not Perfection
You won’t always get it right—and that’s okay. Sometimes, what you thought was intuition turns out to be fear in disguise. But even in those moments, you’re learning. Every time you reflect on how a choice made you feel afterward, you get better at telling the difference.
Final Words: You Already Know the Answers
At the end of the day, intuition is not some superpower reserved for a select few—it’s something we all have. It’s the inner compass that has always been guiding you, even in moments when you weren’t sure you could trust it.
So, the next time you find yourself torn between intuition or anxiety, take a breath and ask yourself:
✔ Does this thought feel peaceful or pressured?
✔ Am I moving from trust or from fear?
✔ Does this decision make me feel expansive or constricted?
Your body, your emotions, and your energy will always give you the answer. Trust yourself—you already know.
